Every business with an older web or mobile app asks the same question at some point: do we rebuild it, fix it up, or leave it alone? The answer changes a lot of money and risk, and it is often made by default, when something breaks.

This post gives you a way to decide on purpose. It uses the options that AWS lists in its migration guidance, explained here for business owners, plus the questions that choose between them.

What Are Your Options?

AWS’s Prescriptive Guidance describes seven migration strategies, known as the 7 Rs: retire, retain, rehost, relocate, repurchase, replatform, and refactor or re-architect. They were written for moving applications to the cloud, but the thinking helps with any aging system. In plain words:

OptionWhat it meansWhen it can fit
RetireSwitch the application offNobody needs it any more. AWS lists no business value, the cost of running it and security risk from unsupported components as reasons.
RetainLeave it where it is for nowAWS lists reasons such as compliance, a recent upgrade, dependencies on other systems, or a plan to move to a vendor’s service later.
RehostMove it as it is, often called lift and shiftYou need to move quickly. AWS says the application is moved without changes, and is then easier to optimize once it runs in the cloud.
ReplatformMove it with targeted changesSome parts need to change, but a full rewrite is not needed.
RepurchaseReplace it with a different productA ready-made product now does the job. AWS calls this “drop and shop”.
Refactor or re-architectRedesign how it is builtThe structure itself blocks what you need.

The table leaves out relocate, which AWS describes as moving servers to a cloud version of the same platform, or between accounts and regions. It is mostly an infrastructure matter. AWS also says that refactoring is the most complex of the strategies. For large migrations it recommends moving first and modernizing afterwards.

Questions That Choose Between Them

  1. Does the business still need it? If few people use it, retire or replace it.
  2. What is actually broken? Slow, hard to change, insecure, expensive to host or unsupported are different problems with different fixes.
  3. How often does it change? An app that changes every month needs a structure that makes change easy. One that never changes may just need keeping safe.
  4. What does it connect to? Dependencies decide what you can move first.
  5. Is a product available that does the job? Buying is often faster than building.
  6. What is the cost of doing nothing? Include security risk, staff time and lost sales.

Where AI Fits

Many owners come to modernization because they want AI features, such as an assistant, smarter search or automated reports. AI agents need to reach your data through clean interfaces. An old system with no interfaces, scattered data and no documentation makes every AI project slower.

That is one more reason to treat modernization as groundwork. A system with clear interfaces and tidy data is ready for AI features when you are.

Warning Signs You Are Deciding Badly

  • The decision is made after a failure instead of before.
  • Everyone proposes a full rebuild, with no look at cheaper options.
  • Nobody can say what the old system does, so the rebuild copies its problems.
  • There is no plan for moving the data.
  • There is no owner on the business side.

The Rule to Adopt

Before you approve a rebuild, ask what is actually broken and compare it with the cheaper options, and name one business owner who decides what the new system must do.

How Incresco Helps

Incresco is a Claude partner. We build web and mobile applications, cloud systems, Salesforce solutions, WhatsApp experiences and AI agents. For businesses with an aging application, we help compare the options, plan the move, and prepare the system for AI features. See our custom platform development, cloud and DevOps and AI transformation services.

Unsure whether to rebuild or modernize? Contact Incresco and ask for an application modernization review. We will go through what the app does, what is wrong with it and what your options cost in time and risk, and tell you which path to take first.
